Have you ever told a child they’re an awesome helper and not have a huge smile spread across their face?! No, of course not. Kids love to help. The tricky part for us moms is letting them! I’ll be honest, at 5 and 3 years old having chores for my kids never really crossed my mind. Usually things came up during the day and it was just so much faster to do it myself, so I didn’t think much of it and just did it myself. Then came the twins and it was all hands on deck, little ones included. After the first couple weeks, it was just me and the kids home all day and I relied on my “big kids” quite a bit. Actually, I think the way we included them in every task from the beginning is one of the major reasons they adjusted so easily to such a major change. We were a family working together to take care of each other, and that made it fun. And let me tell you, I was blown away with how capable they were to truly be a help.
Even in the fog of those first few months, it quickly became clear that by not having them help around the house that I was missing an opportunity to teach my kids some important lessons. As I let them help more and more, I saw them taking pride in their work and they loved the challenge of tackling new tasks. It’s a running joke now that Andrew makes a better lunch than Daddy.
So now that the babies are on a sleep schedule and our days have settled into a routine, I knew I had to continue to have them help out. Chores are a great way to teach kids to be responsible, independent, accountable, and thoughtful. They learn to pick up after themselves without being asked, to work as a team, and so many other valuable life skills.
I started to look for a Chore Chart that we could use as a reminder (for the kids but mostly for me) about the chores they should complete. I wanted something that I could change as they get older, and something that would look cute hanging in our home. There are a few different options out there, but none I really loved until I saw the beautiful handmade chalkboards from Kiera Deara Designs.
Kiera is an incredibly creative and talented designer who offers an adorable selection of handmade, personalized, and customizable chalkboards for all kinds of purposes – Chore Charts but also Children’s Birthday, Pregnancy Weekly Tracking, Baby Month by Month Tracking, Back to School, Event Signage, etc. Seriously, I want them all! Ok, well we are very happy with our family of 6 so maybe not the pregnancy tracker…. but, it’d be a great gift!
I opted to have the chores blank because as I said I wanted to be able to switch it up especially as the kids get older. You get to pick from a bunch of really cute themes so I of course added some beachy details! When I received the 20 x 20 framed Chore Chart Chalkboard I was thrilled with the design and quality.
My daughter loves to dress up and she can be a little dramatic (can’t imagine where she gets either!), so of course we had to throw on the Cinderella apron and have some fun showing off our new chore chart!
The kids love it! They dash to that board the second the finish a job and they are SO proud to show off all their check marks!
Want the really good news?! Kiera and I want to give all of you a chance to win your own Kiera Deara Designs masterpiece – a Chore Chart like I have or if you’d rather a Perpetual Chalkboard Calendar– winner can choose either one! Enter below and GOOD LUCK!
